Description of Practice:
I have been a practicing art therapist for over 30 years, working with both children and adults in a variety of clinical settings. Currently I work at the Johnson unit Psychiatric Hospital at Sacred Heart, where I run art therapy groups, stress management and chronic pain management groups for inpatients.
I also offer an 8 week art therapy group treatment program for chronic pain patients in the community. The program includes learning managment of one's pain experience through creative art, writing, and education. Groups involve practice in relaxation training and visualization, pacing, body mechanics; and provide support, and development of patient strengths and responsibility. I believe that each individual is capable of transformation and growth through developing a creative approach to life's circumstances. Art therapy group work facilitates the process of active self-healing as patients explore, express, create and share personal art in response to their experience living with pain. My goal is to facilitate development of resilience, creative attitude and the reduction of physical and emotional suffering in connection with pain. I enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, and feel this approach works in the best interests of clients with the complex issue of chronic pain.
Eight week Art for Chronic Pain groups are free, sponsored by the Sacred Heart Hospital Foundation, and the Pain Society of Oregon.
